Sport at Ellesmere College
Ellesmere College is a rural school which is extremely well resourced with sports facilities including a large refurbished gymnasium with a viewing area, a dance room, several tennis courts, netball courts, a vast playing field with three soccer fields and two rugby fields, an artificial cricket pitch and practice nets.
The following sports are offered at Ellesmere College: Athletics, Swimming, Road Race, Triathlon, Cross Country, Tennis, Softball, Touch, Cricket, Netball, Basketball, Football, Indoor Football, Lawn Bowls, Volleyball, Clay Target Shooting, Volleyball, Rugby, Show Jumping/ Equestrian.
The sports teams either have their uniforms provided by the College or they wear the regulation navy blue PE Polo Shirt or Rugby Jersey with the regulation navy blue sports shorts.
We compete in a range of competitions including Canterbury Secondary Schools Wednesday Sports, Monday Volleyball, Friday Basketball, Athletics, Cross Country, Road Race and Swimming. We also compete in the Canterbury Primary Schools events for our Year 7 and 8 students which include Thursday Winter Sports, Swimming, Athletics, Cross-Country and Tournament days.
In some cases elite teams such as Volleyball and Touch compete in Canterbury, South Island and National Tournaments in various venues around New Zealand.
In Term One the College holds its own Athletic Sports on site which is a compulsory event for all students. The College Swimming Sports are held at the Southbridge swimming pool and this event is compulsory for students in years 7 to 9 but optional for students in years 10 and above.
The school playing fields also host a Cross Country/Fun Run for the whole school that promotes exercise and healthy lifestyles.
In December we hold a Tabloid Sports Day for students in years 7 to 10.
Ellesmere College is part of a network of schools that plays in a Quad Tournament which involves the following schools: Mount Hutt, Darfield High School Ellesmere College and Geraldine High School. This sports exchange programme is for both junior and senior students and tends to be in the winter months with the different schools taking turns at hosting the exchanges.

The teacher in charge of Sport is Mr Chris O’Connell and he is assisted by the sports coordinator and administrator Mrs Karen Palmer as well as the other members of the staff includig the PE department: Mr Sam Forward, Mr Guy Fergusson Ms Annabelle Simpson.
Sport Opportunities at Ellesmere College
The Ellesmere College Athletic Sports are held onsite in term one each year and from here a team is selected to compete in the Combined Country High Schools Athletic Championships at Rawhiti Domain. From here athletes can progress to the Canterbury Secondary School Championships and the South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships.
Our swimming sports are held in February each year at the Southbridge Community Pool. While the event is compulsory for years 7 to 9, students in year 10 and above can choose to enter. Successful swimmers can progress to the Canterbury Secondary Schools Championships, South Island Championships and National championships.
Road Race and Cross Country
The school Cross Country/Fun Run takes place at the end of term one each year. From here students can progress to the annual Canterbury Secondary Schools Road Race at Hagley Park and the Cross Country Championships at Halswell Quarry. The Year 7 and 8 students Cross Country is held at Halswell Quarry in June and we usually have a team of approximately sixteen students in this event and from here they can qualify for an Inter-Regional Representative team.
Our Year 7 and 8 team competes at the Canterbury Primary Schools Triathlon which is held at Pegasus Town.
Ellesmere College runs a competition in term four each year to find the school champion. Our Year 9 and 10 students compete at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Tennis Championships at Wilding Park.
This is a sport that has been growing gradually at Ellesmere College due to the enthusiastic efforts of Mr Dayle Stoliker.
This is a popular sport and the team competes in the Canterbury Touch Championships held in February at Sheldon Park Belfast.
Cricket is offered in both the senior and junior school. In recent years a junior team has competed successfully in the Year 7 and 8 National Tournament in Palmerston North.
Each year our Senior A team competes at the South Inter-Secondary Schools’ Netball tournament. We also enter the Canterbury Secondary Schools Wednesday netball competition and we have two teams entered in the Primary Schools Competition every Thursday afternoon in the winter months.
In 2015 we had seven teams competing in the Friday night Canterbury Secondary Schools Competition and a Year 7and 8 team that played after school on Mondays.
We have a Year 9 and 10 team playing in the Wednesday competition and two teams playing on Thursdays in the Primary Schools Competition.
This is offered during the summer months with games taking place at Indoor Stadiums in Christchurch.
This sport is offered during the summer terms with players competing at various secondary school competitions in Christchurch and nationally.
These games are played on Monday nights. Ellesmere College has senior girls and boys teams as well as some junior teams.
Clay Target Shooting
We have a very accomplished team of shooters with great support from the community. The team competes at the South Island Championships and also the Nationals Championships.
This is played every Wednesday afternoon in the Metro Canterbury competition. We have a First XV, a Year 9 and 10 team, a girls combined team and a Year 7 and 8 team.
Events are offered to students as they arise. Each year there is Show Jumping, Dressage and a One Day Horse Trial at different times during the year.
